About us

The story behind Porthcawl Distillery

As best friends since school, we always dreamed of setting up a business together, but life always seemed to get in the way. One dark winter evening in 2021 we decided to take the plunge – and Porthcawl Distillery was born.

We wanted to create something unique, using hand-picked local botanicals and paying homage to the wonderful coastal town we call home.

With detailed research and planning (we drank a LOT of gin!), our vision became reality and the original Porthcawl Welsh Dry Gin launched in June 2023, with exciting new flavours joining the range soon after.

Porthcawl Distillery is a family run business that is fully independent, something we are incredibly proud of. Every spirit we create is unique thanks to our truly small batch and individual approach.

We ensure that the origin of all of our premium Welsh gins have their roots firmly planted in Wales, using locally sourced botanicals at every opportunity, ensuring a true taste of the coastline.

We are based in the grounds of the Sandville Self Help Foundation, nestled in a lovely wooden cabin. Our premium spirits are distilled in our beautiful 50L copper pot; all stills need a name and a personality, and ours was christened ‘Elvis!

Like the other Elvis, we hope ours will bring joy and happiness to the world and leave you crying out for more! And, of course, our beloved Porthcawl is home to the iconic Elvis Festival every year, one of the biggest Elvis festivals in the world – so the name was meant to be!

About Porthcawl

The village of Porthcawl, home to our distillery, is surrounded by nature – expansive golf courses, golden beaches, and a breathtaking coastline which features the famous Porthcawl Lighthouse – the inspiration for our branding. Those who live here think of Porthcawl as a special place, with a community spirit, and wonderful walks and scenery on the doorstep.

Picturesque Porthcawl attracts over 100,000 visitors a year, and is easily accessible just off the M4 and a stone’s throw away from the coast which overlooks The Bristol Channel. We have a great view from our distillery and we welcome visitors, with advance notice.

Our chosen charity

The Sandville Self Help Foundation charity supports people with life limiting and life changing conditions, providing a variety of physical, social, emotional, and psychological support through therapies and treatments.  These include conditions such as cancer, MS, MND, Parkinson’s, stroke and dementia - just to name a few.

The charity is featured on our bottle label design, we provide raffle prizes for their events, we take part in treks and expeditions to raise sponsorship monies, and we make monthly donations to the cause.
